connie culpThe story of Connie Culp, America’s first face transplant, is a remarkable milestone in the world of facial surgery. Most importantly, it is an inspirational story of struggle and triumph. About five years ago, Connie was shot by her own husband and that shotgun blast destroyed her cheeks, nose, an eye, and the roof of her mouth. Hundreds of fragments of shotgun pellet and bone splinters were embedded in her face. She needed a tube into her windpipe to breathe. Only her upper eyelids, forehead, lower lip and chin were left.
